PVA string was probably the first PVA product to be used for Carp Fishing. It has a number of uses and due to its cheap cost lasts a long time. It can be used for tying off PVA bags, for making PVA Stringers, for streamlining rigs for distance casting, and for tying long hair rigs so they do not tangle on the cast. For PVA bags a small 20cm piece can be used for tying up the bag. With experience the more bags you tie up with this method the fuller the bag can be. For the inexperienced you might find a third hand would be useful to hold the top of the bag together leaving two hands free to tie the bag. In this situation a simple clothes peg can be utilized to hold the bag together leaving 2 hands free to tie the bag. PVA Stringers are a number of baits threaded directly on the the PVA string. This is then tied to the rig, usually somewhere near the hookbait and cast out. The number one mistake people make here is the y leave no space between the baits. This means the water can not penetrate the string and it doesn't dissolve easily. A 1cm gap between the baits ensures the PVA can melt properly. When the PVA melts it generally pulls the baits closer to each other so the same presentation (ie a cluster of small baits) is presented to the fish. This mimics the small pockets of food the fish naturally find due to the natural collection of food in depressions on the lake bed. Most people that use stringers usually add one 6-10 bait stringer to their rig and cast it out. We have found that by adding 4 or 5 smaller stringers it is far more effective, however the distance you can cast is a little impeded. PVA string can also be used for streamlining your rig for better distance presentation, this technique is not commonly used these days but if you are using a longer hooklink it may be advantageous to tie the longer hooklink against anti-tangle tubing. Long hairs can also tangle easily so PVA can again be used here to anchor the long hair against the hook ensuring it cant tangle.
